Locomotion museum is situated less than 1 mile away, the drive to Eden Grange passes beside this fantastic museum of living history. The Flying Scotsman is visiting Locomotion from 16th December 2023 to 2 January 2024. It’s visit marks part of the centenary year of the Flying Scotsman.

The Flying Scotsman locomotive is a 4-6-2 “Pacific” steam locomotive built in 1923 for the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) at Doncaster Works to a design of Nigel Gresley. It was the first locomotive to run on the newly formed LNER and was named after the Flying Scotsman express passenger train service between London King’s Cross and Edinburgh Waverley.

The Flying Scotsman was the first steam locomotive to reach an officially authenticated speed of 100 mph (161 km/h), while hauling a light test train between Leeds and London in 1934. It also held the record for the longest non-stop run by a steam locomotive, covering 460 miles (740 km) from London to Newcastle without refuelling in 1937.

Situated as we are, close to the cradle of the railway, Eden Grange Glamping offers accommodation for anyone interested in or wishing to learn more about Shildon, the railways and the iconic Flying Scotsman.
